Sweni Lion Pride

Latest Lion News:

The Sweni Lion Pride

Five of the six Mayambula Male Lions were observed a few months ago just south of the Sweni Pride territory.
We spotted one of the Mayambula males mating with a Sweni Lioness on the Sweni Plains in the centre of the Sweni Pride territory in early 2024.
We aren't sure what happened to the three Sweni Pride males at this point.
We will keep you informed.

Drama in the Sweni Mega Lion Pride

The Sweni pride over the years has been an extremely successful pride in Kruger National Park. Under the protection of the three pride males, they are thriving. The Sweni Lion Pride is roughly around 20 members strong, all of whom are of different ages. The Sweni pride can be found along parts of the S126, H1-3 and occasionally western parts of the H6.

Sweni Mega Lion Pride with a Wildebeest kill

It was wonderful to spend a day with the Sweni Mega Lion Pride while they were feasting on a wildebeest they caught the previous night. Archive footage filmed on the Sweni Plains just south of the Sweni River Bridge of the H1-3 in Kruger National Park, South Africa.

Mean-looking three Sweni Lion Pride males

Wow, what a strange sighting! The three Sweni Pride males were spotted on the H6 just south of Satara Rest-camp and very close to the original territory of Casper the White Lion and his three Shish Brothers. They walked down the H1-3 all the way from the H6 to their normal territory down at the Sweni River on the S126. What were they doing in Shish Territory? Did they know that the Shish Brothers were expanding west? We will have to wait to see what happens next!

Facts of the Sweni Mega Lion Pride

The beautiful Sweni Lion Pride Look how the CUBS have grown! The Sweni Mega Lion Pride currently consists of 5 lionesses, 3 huge males, and 9 cute, playful cubs, some of whom have become sub-adults now. Watch them here about seven months ago: Drama In The Sweni Mega Lion Pride - https://youtu.be/47c7GnLOr74 And: Sweni Lion Cubs Abandoned By The Pride - https://youtu.be/q897zx-GS1U The Original three males that ruled the Sweni pride till around 2018/2019 took over the N’wanetsi pride, up further north, during 2019 - now only one male remains. The other two probably died during the COVID lock-down in 2020. Watch the current N'wanetsi Pride with the remaining OLD Sweni Pride Male here: https://youtu.be/LWn3sa9kN94 We are not sure about the origin of the current three Sweni Males. One thing we know for sure is that this is probably one of the most stable and successful Lion Prides currently in Kruger National Park. The three Pride Males are most of the time in the presence of the females and cubs and their bellies are full every time we spot them. Their territory is along the Sweni River and the adjacent Sweni plains where you will find lots and lots of Wildebeest, Zebra and Giraffe as well as the occasional passing of Buffalo herds. THEIR CLOSEST RIVALS ARE: To the North: The Two Nkaya Males, often recently seen with the Nsemani Lionesses (https://youtu.be/idpXg9bMLDg) because The Nsemani Pride Males, Rockfig and Senior Mbiri, are at the end of their lifespan (https://youtu.be/eC_6HkUKFFw) And the Four Shish Males - Casper the White Lion and Brothers that control the Satara Pride (https://youtu.be/m8BO5iFV56Y) To the West: The Two Leeubron Males that control the Shimangwaneni Pride (https://youtu.be/7cLIHHQmHz8) To the East: The Seven Southern Pride Males (https://youtu.be/RdnqWDoBtOg) And the Two Kumana and Maputo Males that now control the Shishangaan Pride in which Casper and Brothers were born. To the South: The One Hamiltons Male, a nomad (https://youtu.be/dwVEde_oNxM) And the Two Nwaswitsontso Males that now control the Hamiltons Pride (https://youtu.be/00VR8vkiKJM). In this video you will see that one of the Sweni Pride Males is trying very hard to expand the pride. Filmed just of the H1-3 south of the Sweni River in Kruger National Park between Satara Rest-camp and the Kumana Dam.
